Half a Million Words

Sometime in the last week or two I hit the half million word mark.  That’s counting words since I decided to get “serious” about this writing thing about three and a little years ago.  And only counting words written for short stories, novels, or non-fiction books.  It doesn’t include the probably close to half a million words I’ve blogged in that time.  (Average of 1,000 words a post times close to 500 posts…Wow.)

I’ve definitely learned a ton about writing and being a writer since I started.  I didn’t even know how to punctuate dialogue when I wrote that first short story.  And I do really think this latest novel (the third one for those keeping track) is a much better story than the first.

(I actually read the first chapter of the first one at my writing group about a month ago and surprised myself with how good it sounded.  Problem, of course, wasn’t that first chapter.  The problem was where the story went–or in this case, didn’t go–from there.)

I’ve bounced around a bit with my writing, trying to find what to write, so those 500,000 words aren’t all directed towards the same goal.  Probably 100,000 to short stories, 200,000 to spec fic novels, 100,000 to non-spec fic, and 100,000 to non-fiction or other randomness.

If it had all been focused on one goal, I think I’d be further along than I am.  (Lesson learned…)

But I do feel like I’m on the cusp.  If it isn’t this novel, then I think it’ll be the next one that pushes me through.  And I think if I did turn back to short stories I’d be about five to ten stories away from a sale.  Maybe less given what I’ve learned in the last year.  (Hard to tell.  It’s possible that gap between almost there and yes is infinite.)

And it’s only October.  The year is still young…Hey, if I up my game some, maybe I can crank out another 200,000 before 2015 arrives?  Haha.  Okay, no.  I’m about to start edits on novel three and that means reduced word counts for the next month or so.  But maybe another 100K in November and December?

Yeah, that’ll do it…Well, best get back to it or none if it’s ever going to happen…To be a writer, you must write, yes?
